The Issue  | Avoid & Reduce | Offset

What's the issue?

The perception of workplace travel varies from a desireable  "perk"  of the job, to an "obligation" that takes people away from their families and it is now recognised as a significant source of greenhouse gas emissions.

In a world of mobile phones, smartphones, email and internet, we now have viable alternatives to the traditional business meeting and we can reduce our travel without compromising business outcomes.  In fact we can even enhance business outcomes while reducing our environmental footprint.

How to avoid and reduce emissions...

Here are some ideas to avoid and reduce emissions.  Check out our sustainable transport guide for businesses for more ideas and inspiration.

  • Consider alternatives to the traditional face-to-face meeting.  Will an email or phone conversation achieve the same outcomes?
  • Teleconferencing or internetconferencing technologies are now providing viable alternatives to traditional meetings.  Set up and operating costs are readily recouped through savings in airfares, taxi fares, fuel costs, staff time, etc.  On top of that, your staff will spend more time with their families and more time in the office - everyone wins.
  • InterCall Australia have customised a version of their web conferencing system for Greenfleet.  The Greenfleet Meeting Centre not only helps you avoid the emissions generated by traditional travel to meetings, but an extra tree will be planted for every 3 hours you spend on the system (that's just a single one hour meeting between yourself and two other people).

Some workplace travel is probably still inevitable, but you can still take action to reduce the emissions created.

  • Encourage staff to travel via public transport to work appointments.  Purchase public transport tickets in advance and make them available from a central location in the workplace, along with timetables, maps and other information to assist with public transport mobility.
  • Travel by public transport in other cities / countries too.  The internet allows us to plan routes and check timetables before we depart, so you can save money and travel like the locals.
  • Catch the airport bus / train between airports and big cities where they operate.  If there isn't a suitable public transport option, strike up a conversation in the taxi queue and share a cab with someone going to a similar destination.
  • Car pool to meetings if public transport is not a viable option.  You'll create less emissions than if you each drove and  you can also do some pre-meeting planning or discuss other workplace issues while travelling.

Offset the rest

It's important that we counteract the impact of the greenhouse emissions we create by undertaking an activity to absorb an equivalent amount of greenhouse gas from the atmosphere.  Greenfleet plants permanent, biodiverse, native forests to offset greenhouse gas emissions on behalf of businesses and individuals.
