The Critical Decade

The Climate Commission has released an update reviewing what sicence is telling us about the need to act on climate change and the risks of a challenging climate to Australia.

Some media and sceptics have latched on to comments about the inability of forests to replace all the fossil fuel carbon that humans have released into the atmosphere, but of course this is grasping at an oversimplistic view of the report's contents.

In fact there is firm support within the document for forests to be part of the climate change solution, particularly if they can deliver biodiversity co-benefits.

The report reinforces that a number of measures all need to be taken, and taken soon, to fight climate change.  And one of those measures is land based sequestration, including replanting forests.

Here are some direct quotes from the document that reinforce the role of biodiverse forests as part of the climate change solution:

"First, such sequestration is indeed a rapid way to begin reducing the anthropogenic burden of CO in the atmosphere.  Thus, it yields some quick gains while the slower process of transforming energy and transport systems unfolds.

Furthermore, if done carefully, sequestration of carbon into land ecosystems can lead to many other co-benefits, such as enhanced soil condition, more productive agricultural systems, and better biodiversity outcomes."

and recommendations surrounding land based sequestration.

At Greenfleet we are confident that this report reinforces our 'Avoid, Reduce & Offset' approach to managing carbon and tackling climate change.
