Greenfleet has completed an initial assessment of the impacts of the bushfires on our forests. To date, less than 1% (or about 50 hectares) of all Greenfleet forests have been impacted. Our Foresters are continuing to assess any potential damage from the fires and rest assured we will ensure that any permanent losses of forests are replanted.
Forest fires are a natural part of the Australian landscape. Australian native species have evolved to cope with fire and in fact many of our native species require fire for germination of seed.
Greenfleet uses a very conservative carbon accounting model to estimate the carbon stored in the forests. We base our calculations of the carbon captured by a forest on the Department of Climate Change, National Carbon Accounting Toolbox. We count the carbon in the tree trunks, roots, branches and leaves. We do not count the carbon stored in the soil nor in the forest debris, nor in the understory which are often most impacted by fire.
We remain confident that our forests are taking carbon from the atmosphere in line with our commitment to our supporters.
