Fosters Group

945 vehicles

Foster's Group has made a strong commitment to developing sustainable transport practices through:

  • Driver training, which teaches driving techniques that make our staff not only safer drivers, but also kinder to the environment
  • Information and tips on safe driving and environmental friendly driving behaviour for staff
  • Tools for employees to easily monitor their own fuel consumption
  • Incentives (prizes) for staff who change their behaviours and reduce their emissions
  • Introducing more 4 cylinder and diesel options into our car fleet

We have observed significant reductions in fuel consumption – which also means less greenhouse gas emissions – and the cost savings have been put towards planting more trees (through Greenfleet), a double benefit for the environment.

Queensland Government

3,774 vehicles

In 2002, the Queensland government's vehicle fleet manager, QFleet, became the nation's biggest supporter of Greenfleet.

QFleet's involvement with the Greenfleet program reached a milestone in June 2008, with Public Works Minister Robert Schwarten planting the partnership's 500,000th tree near Ipswich.

When QFleet's trees are fully grown, it's estimated they will have negated approximately 150 kilotonnes of carbon dioxide, which is equivalent to taking more than 38,000 cars off the road for one year.

In addition to offsetting emissions, QFleet farewelled the last V8 from the passenger fleet in early June 2008, with more diesel, hybrid, micro, light and small vehicles being added to the passenger fleet as part of a plan to cut emissions by 15% over the next three years.  The goal is to then reduce emissions further - by 25% in five years and 50% in ten years.

AAMI

Joining Greenfleet is just one of the ways AAMI is trying to make a difference and reduce our impact on the environment. Our entire corporate fleet is now part of the initiative.

AAMI’s staff are committed to environmental issues and have demonstrated this by switching all our printed products to recycled paper, and including an environmental promise in each Customer Charter since 2001 – that means we’ve promised to measurably reduce our impact on the environment from year to year. Our staff members are passionate about it, it’s important to our customers, and we recognise that environmental issues are of concern to the insurance industry as a whole.

ACT Government

1,114 VEHICLES

The ACT Government is committed to reducing the ACT’s greenhouse gas emissions and supports Australia’s ratification of the Kyoto Protocol.  The ACT was the first State or Territory in Australia to set itself measurable greenhouse reduction targets, which are in excess of Australia’s commitment at Kyoto.  And we have already achieved Milestone 4 of the International Council for Local Environmental Initiatives’ Cities for Climate Protection Program.

As one of the largest fleet operators in the ACT, we are committed to showing leadership by reducing the impact of our motor vehicles on the environment.  The Government already has a higher proportion of electric-petrol hybrid vehicles in its fleet than any other State or Territory jurisdiction, and has for several years been following a policy of replacing large six-cylinder fleet vehicles with smaller, four-cylinder vehicles.

The ACT Government is subscribing to Greenfleet for its entire passenger vehicle fleet – the benefits of subscription flow beyond the offset of greenhouse emissions to encouraging community involvement in the restoration of our landscape.  We will continue to seek innovative solutions to create a sustainable future.

Bayside City Council recognises the significance of climate change and the opportunities for urban communities to reduce their net greenhouse gas emissions.  Through its participation in the Cities for Climate Protection Program, Bayside is progressively implementing strategies for reducing emissions and counteracting the emissions that remain.  This broad program encompasses the whole Bayside community and its use of energy.

Bayside City Council is aware that its own vehicle fleet makes a notable contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and is delivering a program for reducing and neutralising this source and showing leadership to the local community.  Council has changed the profile of its vehicle fleet to encourage alternate, lower greenhouse, fuels such as LPG.  Combined with a flagship petrol-electric hybrid vehicle, the direct greenhouse emissions of Council's vehicle fleet have been reduced.

Greenfleet has been embraced by Council as a means of neutralising the remaining greenhouse emissions from the vehicle fleet.  Council also recognises the additional benefits that tree planting brings to the environment and local communities.  Greenfleet is a convenient way for Bayside City Council to move a step closer to environmental sustainability.

Department of Family and Community Services

The Australian Government Department of Family and Community Services (FaCS) develops and implements policies that promote the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. We recognise that our contribution can and should extend beyond our policies to the way we do business. This recognition is reflected in FaCS publishing its first Triple Bottom Line (TBL) Report that examines the environmental, social and economic performance of our  operations (see www.facs.gov.au/tblreport/).

As part of our efforts to improve FaCS' environmental performance we have encouraged the senior executive for whom we provide cars to join Greenfleet. Our Victoria and NSW State Offices have also joined their fleet vehicles up to Greenfleet. In 2004 we will be encouraging all of our staff to become Greenfleet members and become involved in tree planting activities.

Department of Finance and Deregulation

55 VEHICLES

The role of the Commonwealth Department of Finance and Deregulation(Finance) is to help the Australian Government achieve its policy objectives by contributing to four key outcomes: sustainable Government finances; improved and more efficient Government operations; efficiently functioning Parliament; and effective and efficient use of information and communication technology by the Australian Government.

Finance is committed to environmentally sustainable business practices.  Finance recycles paper and cardboard, printer cartridges, plastics, metals, glass, Ni-cd batteries, mobile phones and fluorescent tubes.  Finance also, wherever practical, recycles building fit-out materials, furniture and stores.  Recycled paper is also widely used across the department.

In line with its commitment to environmental sustainability and its objective of improved environmental performance, Finance has subscribed its executive and operational fleet vehicles to the Greenfleet Australia program.  For the Finance fleet of 55 vehicles this represents the annual abatement of 236.5 tonnes of CO2 through the planting of 883 trees.

We have approximately 3,400 staff that are located across more than 60 sites throughout South Australia, and are strongly committed to reducing our impact on the environment. Our collaboration with Greenfleet is a win-win for all participants and encourages re-vegetation of depleted native forests in South Australia.

The department continues to increase its alternate fuelled vehicle fleet and has approved new policy which mandates where appropriate, vehicles to have duel fuel capability and also added focus to use more 4 cylinder vehicles in the greater Adelaide metropolitan area.

Other technological advances such as Teleconferencing are providing alternatives to using motor vehicles as a tool to progress our business priorities, and contributing to a better environment for all.

Freehills Solicitors

GIFT-MATCHING SCHEME

One important aspect of Freehills’ environment policy is to encourage staff to use sustainable transport to get to work, and for work travel. To encourage walking and cycling to work, Freehills provides bike storage and showers in each offices. To encourage the use of public transport, Freehills offers staff interest free loans to buy annual transport tickets. Freehills is also improving access to video conferencing facilities to reduce the demand for air travel.

Freehills realises that some staff prefer or need to drive to or from work. In order to encourage these staff members to travel sustainably, we decided to promote Greenfleet, one of our pro-bono clients. We informed staff that by subscribing to Greenfleet they will be able to neutralise their greenhouse gas emissions generated by car travel. As a sweetener, Freehills decided to gift-match all subscriptions. In the day following the launch of the initiative Freehills staff had subscribed 17 cars. We hope to get to 50.

Landcom

11 VEHICLES

Landcom is a masterplanner of living communities and has developed residential, commercial and industrial properties for close to 30 years in New South Wales.  Landcom strives to deliver quality developments which set new standards in social, environmental and economic sustainability. In this regard, Landcom’s mission is to take the lead in creating better communities.

In 1995 Landcom prepared its first ESD strategy. This provided a springboard for the development of focused environmental, social and urban design programs and initiatives. We now operate under the guises of a broader Sustainability Policy which sets out four broad principals which help to guide Landcom’s operations. Our Sustainability Policy is delivered and monitored through our Environmental Management System and unique Triple Bottom Line Reporting (TBL) program. Our Sustainability principals are to: Deliver sustainable quality of life; Conserve resources; Protect biodiversity; and Minimise pollution. The public reporting of Landcom’s performance against these principals, through our TBL program, has made the Corporation more accountable by allowing stakeholders to question results, to better understand the constraints that Landcom faces and to challenge the Corporation to strive harder.

Sustainability is not a static concept for Landcom. The Corporation recognises that a culture of sustainable practice must be integrated into all of its business decision-making processes - from buying computers for administrative use to developing major suburbs.

Landcom operates a number of programs aimed at reducing and mitigating the impacts of our greenhouse gas emissions, for example, through our Energy Smart Communities policy we seek to reduce the ongoing greenhouse gases produced as a result of the houses built in our developments. Landcom’s policy requires our houses to achieve a score of 40, which is 20 points higher than the current NSW requirement under the BASIX initiative.

The Greenfleet program complements our Energy Smart Communities policy by targeting another key area of greenhouse gas production, our vehicle fleet. The program is also assisting Landcom to meet its sustainability objectives in other ways. The funding provided to Greenfleet by Landcom is assisting to deliver the Murray Darling Rescue Project. This program will contribute to salinity reduction and soil conservation, biodiversity conservation and water quality improvements in that region. Landcom is proud to play a part in this critical initiative.
